WHRO Education is owned by the Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association (HRETA), a consortium of its 21 owner-member school districts in Eastern Virginia. Established in 1963 as a provider of educational technological solutions, HRETA now operates several Public Media Radio and TV stations, while also providing services to the teachers, educators, and students in Virginia.
A long time partner with the Virginia Department of Education, HRETA is responsible for hosting Virtual Virginia, which offers online Advanced Placement (AP®), world language, core academic, and elective courses to students across the Commonwealth and the nation. HRETA also partners with many other organizations and institutions to further enhance virtual education throughout Virginia.
HRETA serves 25,000 educators and 280,000 students locally in the Eastern Virginia region and 155,000 educators and over 1.2 million students statewide.
